ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relationship between the incidence of poverty and the food consumption pattern as well as the nutritional intake of households in the north-eastern region (NER) of India. It focuses on the calorie intake, protein intake, and fat intake. The chapter analyses three main social groups, namely the scheduled tribes, scheduled castes and non-scheduled tribes/scheduled castes. It describes the data and methodology used. The chapter looks at poverty incidence. It discusses nutritional intake and the food consumption pattern. The chapter discusses nutritional intake as measured by the per capita daily intake of calorie, protein, and fat in the NER. It looks at the major food items that are consumed by households. The chapter also looks at the sources of those items - whether they are homegrown or purchased or collected freely. It discusses how the households allocate their total food expenditure over various commodity groups.
