ABSTRACT

If we observe those around us, we will find that even between couples who have lived together for decades there can often be, a complex unspoken agreement, the main tenet of which is that it is best not to know one's partner through and through. Whatever binds them must serve the greater good, providing a source of inspiration in the face of adversity from within, between, or outside of the relationship. While every couple forms a dynamic system, composed of conscious and unconscious elements of each member, not every couple shares a couple state of mind. Goldner suggests that their emotion-drenched histories send them plummeting into attachment patterns that they have no recourse other than to repeat. For Bion, the dream represents a proto-thought in which aspects of unconscious life appear in order to be linked together. The role of dynamic unconsciousness in the psychic lives of couples functions in similar ways.
