ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a range of factors that affect the sexual behaviours and development of young people, seeking to consider how the education system might develop inclusive approaches to the provision of support and guidance. There are many facets to the influence and impact of the media on the sexual behaviours of children and young people. Children are aware of a range of sexual or sexualised identities from a young age, although this does not mean that they are aware of any associated sexual behaviours. Social media and technology are an important part of contemporary Western life which adds to the complexity, for children and young people, of negotiating this safely. Social media makes it easy for personal information to be shared and an educator's role may now have to entail consideration for how this is to be approached and addressed within a classroom setting.
