ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what we mean by learners and learning with reference to schooling and education. It considers the notion of diversity and difference between learners as well as commonalities between them. Learning takes many forms, including cognition, social learning and physical learning. According to T. Bertram and C. Pascal, positive dispositions to learn can be defined as frequent habits of thinking and doing, and include such attributes being curious, self-motivated, resilient and independent. Education professionals will be frequently mindful of these stages when planning learning experiences in order for the learner to have exposure to them. Diversity and differences between learners are a fundamental consideration for educators and present many opportunities for a rich learning experience for all. It can be seen that external drivers, as well as frames of thinking and pedagogical considerations, influence how inclusive policies and practice are implemented.
