ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses gender identity, issues of equality and perceptions of gender disparity in educational achievement and attainment. It explores the challenges of creating a gender inclusive education setting, including the development of a culture and ethos which recognises the needs of gender diverse learners. In relation to equality and the achievement of specific genders, the content and nature of the curriculum is often discussed. Issues of gender equality are particularly relevant within specific ethnic and community groups. Gender refers to the social and cultural differences that may identify an individual as being male or female. It contrasts with the term sex, which refers to the biological characteristics of an individual. Significant forward steps have been made in education with respect of gender diversity and its impact on educational experience. Most schools within the United Kingdom require students to wear a school uniform or adhere to a specific dress code.
