ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys attitudes toward Jews and Judaism in the works of the church Fathers from the close of the New Testament through the fifth century. In this period, Judaism and Christianity were seen by the church as competitors. The essay discusses the sources and their languages, including Syriac and the works of the Coptic and Greek desert fathers. A section follows on text editions, translations, and handbooks for the study of patristic literatures. The chapter closes with a consideration of chronology, geography, genres of writing, and methods of comparative exegesis.
