ABSTRACT

We have evidence for Jewish communities in at least 75 cities in Asia Minor. The evidence for these communities is varied and ranges from the largest synagogue known from antiquity in Sardis and the two inscriptions from Aphrodisias, which list many “God-fearers”, to extensive numbers of Jewish epitaphs found in Hierapolis and Korykos. This varied evidence shows that these Jewish communities in Asia Minor were often socially involved in their cities and yet were also able to maintain a clear identity as cohesive Jewish communities.
