ABSTRACT

The chapter presents the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) process and describes the targets and indicators associated with SDG 6. It proposes ways in which improved basin management can accelerate achievement of the SDGs in the Zambezi. The United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development first met in 2014; it is the main forum for sustainable development issues within the UN framework, and is the peak body overseeing global implementation and review. The HLPW Action Plan was released in 2016 and promises to be a ‘living document’ for global leadership. Zambezi Basin countries have begun to prepare and plan for the Sustainable Development Goals. Analysing and prioritising gaps while building on strengths will be important for all governments in the basin. There are many international initiatives that governments in the basin could use to understand SDG linkages, which could in turn enhance science, policy and political decisions for sustainable development.
