ABSTRACT

Adults with learning difficulties/attention deficit disorder (LD/ADD) are often confronted with workplace issues arising from the nature of their learning differences. This chapter presents personal perspectives of adults with learning disabilities on issues encountered in the workplace and examines strategies employed by these adults to cope with the challenges they face. The major themes discussed here include workplace challenges and frustrations related to LD/ADD and strategies utilized to compensate for difficulties. Clients with learning disabilities benefit from being able to engage in metacognitive analysis of themselves and their workplace situations. This chapter presents a study in which the participants provide valuable insights into the dilemmas and challenges faced in the workplace by college-educated adults with learning disabilities. Participants reported a variety of workplace problems they attributed to their learning disabilities. Difficulties in writing were noted by every participant, including those whose learning disabilities were not language-based.
