ABSTRACT
The field of educational therapy (ET) has grown significantly since the founding of the Association of Educational Therapists in 1979, with a variety of universities offering training in ET. This chapter discusses a study on examining the efficacy of two educational therapy programs offered at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Other research studies in the field of psychotherapy have shown that the strength of the treatment alliance is related to greater success in treatment. The CSUN Educational Therapy programs are designed to provide a multi-dimensional model of preparation that embeds theory with applied coursework and culminates in a supervised and highly structured internship. Findings of surveys indicate high parent satisfaction with ET services provided to their children and high satisfaction from exiting interns with their ET preparation. Given the strong efficacy ratings in this study, one can imagine if ET services were to be offered in all schools and that general and special education classroom teachers had ET preparation.
