ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Educational therapists (ETs) with a broad overview of a comprehensive model of executive functions, assessment methods, and intervention approaches for identifying and dealing with executive function deficits. ETs work with many clients whose academic and social problems are directly or indirectly related to one or more executive function difficulties. The self-regulation tier is comprised of multiple executive functions responsible for cueing, directing, and coordinating moment-to-moment functioning within the domains of perception, emotion, cognition, and action. Self-regulation executive functions can be activated either non-consciously or through conscious effort. The chapter offers a comprehensive model of executive functions that offered a framework for discussing the role of executive functions in cueing and directing perceptions, emotions, cognitions, and actions within four arenas of involvement: intrapersonal, interpersonal, environment, and symbol system. It concludes with an overview of assessment methods for identifying executive function difficulties as well as an overview of approaches for helping clients deal with executive function difficulties.
