ABSTRACT

Gothenburg is in the midst of extensive transformations and expansion. The city is the centre of a region that has been prosperous and expanding for the last two decades with flourishing industry, trade and culture. The challenges to transform the former harbour and shipyard areas have required long-term and conscious work, and to experiment with new methods for urban development and design. Close collaboration between users, public bodies and other stakeholders has contributed to raising the value of the land along the river that was bought by the city from the Swedish state. The RiverCity Vision is the overall guiding document for the development of all areas within the RiverCity. The form and language of the RiverCity Vision, as in many vision documents, seems to intend to inspire positive feelings and orientation but with a broad openness on how it can be interpreted and materialised. Alvstranden Utveckling AB is an urban development company fully owned by the City of Gothenburg.
