ABSTRACT
When the Allied Occupation of Japan began in September 1945 neither the Japanese nor the Americans knew for certain what the eventual outcome would be for Japanese society. It might seem in retrospect that the only real possibility was the type of liberal reform of Japanese society that actually took place. Yet at that time there were many in both countries who feared an early return to fascist repression, while others were equally alarmed about a communist revolution.
