ABSTRACT

In 1203, Genghis Khan and his horsemen rode out from Mongolia’s ancient capital of Karakorum. Using a new type of bow and cavalry tactics that employed speed and maneuverability on the battlefield, Genghis and his immediate successors conquered nearly all of Asia and Russia. The dreaded Mongol horde laid siege to much of Central Europe before finally being beaten back. In the space of roughly 130 years, the Mongols conquered nearly three-quarters of the known world. Just as quickly as they exploded across the world map, they disappeared. It would be over 700 years before Mongolia emerged from isolation and resurfaced on the world stage.
