ABSTRACT

Australia is continuing to refine its defense policy of increased self-reliance while simultaneously seeking to preserve its valued security ties with the United States, constructively engage the nations within its area of strategic interest, and promote world order concerns through the United Nations. The 1993 Strategic Review and the 1994 White Paper, Defending Australia, are to be viewed as part of an evolutionary process of increasing self-reliance in the post–Cold War world. Before surveying Australia’s security environment, it is necessary to establish the context from which the present dynamic has evolved.
