ABSTRACT
In the past two decades, Taiwan has made enormous progress in economic modernization. In spite of its limited natural resources, the island nation has achieved one of the world's highest sustained rates of economic growth while rapidly upgrading the living standards of its people. Per capita income in 1990 exceeded U.S.$8,000, twenty-five times larger than that of mainland China.
