ABSTRACT

The intent of this chapter is to study the development of Taiwan's local politics under the Kuomintang (KMT) regime in terms of its continuity and future outlook. Basically, after 1950, through setting up proper systems to offer the sharing of power, using in particular the tactics of control and compromise in local politics, the KMT successfully built a mutually reliant interrelationship with the Taiwanese elite and the local populace. The figures and tables included here will help clarify the KMT's operational methods and structuralization of local politics. The purpose of this study is to probe into how the KMT directly or indirectly creates a relationship with Taiwan's local populace through the distribution, coalition, and compromise of political power and an intricate design of organizations and systems.
