ABSTRACT

According to many indicators, the integration of women into the U.S. political system proceeds apace. Voter turnout among women now exceeds that of men, and the trend is for this gap to increase (Leighley and Nagler 1991). The number of female candidates for political office at all levels of government continues to rise, and women's chance for success at the polls appears greater as well (Delli Carpini and Fuchs 1993). The increasing presence of women in the work force, and in politically relevant professions such as the law, portends greater participation as candidates and activists in the future (Darcy, Welch, and Clark 1987; Taeuber 1991).
