ABSTRACT

This chapter examines many aspects of the casino industry, including its place in the overall gambling industry, its size, the variety of venues and corporations that make it up, taxation, internal and external competition, consolidation within the industry, and the industry's future. Casino gambling is clearly the largest component of the gambling industry. Despite the growth of tribal and riverboat casinos since the early 1990s, Nevada and Atlantic City remain the major gambling centers of the casino industry. Bookmaking refers to the placing and accepting of bets on sporting events and horse races that occur in the sports and race "books" of Nevada casinos. In the 1990s, the prospect of creating employment opportunities was an important factor in the decision of many states to legalize casino gambling. Casino gambling is coming to be seen not as a peripheral anomalous activity, but as a significant part of the leisure/entertainment industry.
