Quickening the Pace of Change The previous volume in this series, India Briefing: A Transformative Fifty Years, took a broad overview of events in India from 1947 through 1997. In this volume, we return to focusing on recent changes and events-and there have been many. India has held two national elections, carried out nuclear tests, boomed as an information technology powerhouse, administered the world’s largest mass immunization program, pushed forward on economic reforms, turned around its relationship with the U.S. government, and fought an undeclared war with Pakistan high in the Himalayas.
