ASEAN, East Asia and the Pacific Rim: Thoughts on the New Regionalism

There is a rising sense of East Asian identity. In a November 1999 summit, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders and their counterparts from the non-ASEAN “Three” (China, Japan, and South Korea) sent a strong signal. Other meetings—notably the foreign ministers’ first ever meeting in July 2000, after the ASEAN ministerial meeting—are instructive.
