ABSTRACT
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was founded with three interconnected and ambitious objectives in mind: regional peace, stability, and prosperity. Economic cooperation was to be a key to achieving these goals. At the time of ASEAN’s creation, the Indochina (Vietnam) War was raging and the Cold War threatened to wipe out Southeast Asia’s hopes for a better life. In addition there were disputes among Southeast Asian nations.
