ABSTRACT

After strong growth since the early 2000s, a relatively stable 45% of all employer-provided training (for workers in for-profit, government, and non-profit organizations) is delivered through technology. Learning for work also includes professional and continuing education, and job training programs from providers other than employers. Research has identified characteristics of effective teaching in digital environments, including characteristics or effective online learners and effective teaching techniques. Other developments of interest to researchers include the refocusing of MOOCs from academia to the workplace, the evolution of standards and methodologies for recognizing informal learning, and the adjustment of instructional design processes to more speedily and effectively design online courses. Note: This sector prefers the terms e-learning or online learning or technology-delivered learning to distance education.
