ABSTRACT

Gender still matters in online learning. In the first two editions of the Handbook of Distance Education, it was argued that gender matters in online learning, and the authors in this chapter argue that this still holds true a decade later. Even though the majority of online students are women, the research on online learning downplays or ignores the importance of gender analysis. Furthermore, the literature on access and gender equity is contradictory. This literature review provides an overview of gender and technology, what works and what does not, and women students’ needs and some recommendations on how to meet them.
