ABSTRACT

“Needs of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder” provides a comprehensive overview of common needs experienced by children and adolescents with ASD. The chapter begins with a discussion about the core features of ASD, those that inform diagnosis and school-based identification. Related areas of impairment and how they relate to the overall presentation of ASD are also introduced. Then, examining the needs of individuals considered to be low-functioning and high-functioning, specific symptoms in the domains of social competence, language and communication, restricted and repetitive behavior, adaptive skills, academic skills, and mental health are reviewed, using examples throughout. The chapter concludes with a discussion about how consultation can provide appropriate levels of support to students across the spectrum of need.
