ABSTRACT

“Collaborating with Other Professionals” provides readers with an overview of the various professionals with whom they may work while coordinating services for students with ASD. Medical issues commonly faced by children with ASD are reviewed, and helpful strategies for collaboration with general practitioners and physicians who specialize in working with students with ASD are discussed. Strategies for collaborating across settings are also highlighted. The “Focus on Culture” section discusses providing on-time diagnoses of ASD for children who are at-risk of missing early identification, and how school personnel can use collaboration to improve outcomes for those youth. Collaboration with mental health professionals who are in private practice, including Board Certified Behavior Analysts, is examined. The chapter concludes with information and practical tips for discussing unestablished treatments with children’s families.
