ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses “Future Directions” that summarizes key points and includes a summary discussion of the importance of considering, examining, and responding to features of cultural identity that become apparent during consultation. Each of those topics is briefly reviewed here, before the authors explore what remains unknown about school-based consultation with a focus on learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The authors end with an exploration of what practitioners can provide to students with ASD as our understanding of ASD-focused school-based consultation continues to grow. However, several considerations in the current state of evidence-based interventions (EBI) for ASD can help school-based consultants (SBC) to conceptualize and organize the variety of intervention approaches available, so that appropriate services can be selected as efficiently as possible. Many other aspects of culture, including gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, and others, were not explored in relation to ASD and how it is perceived and treated within schools, families, and communities.
