ABSTRACT

In this chapter, consideration is given to the changing landscape of prison research methods: considering the work looking at the historical contexts of prisons (and the potential role of the prison museum in this examination), and looking critically at some of the commonalities seen in the seminal prison research texts. This is not a detailed critical analysis of the history of prison research methods: rather the chapter highlights some of the challenges that traditional prison research studies have provided in terms of methodology, and looks at the progress made with the developments in prison research processes through greater consideration of the researcher and wider stakeholders in the prison experience; and the need for greater interdisciplinary inclusivity within prison research methods.
