ABSTRACT

This chapter considers some of the more practical elements of undertaking prison research, particularly focusing on access, accessibility, negotiating gatekeepers, and security. The importance of ‘courtesy’ and relationships when negotiating access (and beyond) is reflected on, as is the need to consider a variety of different levels of gatekeeper, from funders, psychologists, the prison governor, other prison staff, and prisoners themselves. Particular attention is given to the National Research Committee, who give approval for prison research in England and Wales, and some of their advice. A ‘Step-by-Step’ of the key processes in the planning and development of a prison research project that must be given consideration is suggested, as is the importance of contingency planning.
