ABSTRACT

This chapter considers some of the key ethical questions and considerations when researching prisons, including the need to ‘protect’ participants, researchers, institutions, and others in the research process. Particular consideration is given to the prison-specific nature of challenges such as notions of vulnerability; confidentiality; informed consent; security; and other ethical responsibilities, including the importance of appropriate supervision for prison researchers. Finally, the chapter considers the ethicality of undertaking prison research at all!
