ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the World Englishes (WE) research that has used ethnography and ethnographic methods until the point. It describes how WE research can be informed through ethnography and ethnographic methods to examine local contexts and investigate the experiences of groups of speakers of various varieties of English. The chapter shows how the relationship of the local and the global can be illuminated through ethnographic methods and, also, how it enables a finer-grained picture of the local experiences of speakers. It provides an assessment of some of the strengths and weaknesses of research utilising ethnographic methods followed by an overview of practical tips for applying such methods in future WE research. The chapter explores some suggestions for further reading, and deals with a discussion on possible future directions of WE research using ethnography and its methods. It explains a timeline of research articles that have used ethnography or ethnographic methods to address their research aims.
