ABSTRACT

In 2011, media analyst Anita Sarkeesian started producing a series of videos entitled ‘Tropes vs. Women in Video Games’, and subsequently helped develop Feminist Frequency, ‘a video web series that explores the representations of women in pop culture narratives. Her work focuses on deconstructing the stereotypes and tropes associated with women in popular culture as well as highlighting issues surrounding the targeted harassment of women in online and gaming spaces’ (Feminist Frequency, 2015). Her videos, which analyse video games through the lens of gender, in the style of a university lecture on pop culture or an academic presentation on gender and media, attracted a great deal of attention.
