ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes that critical assessment of rival ideas, theories and forces need to be mutual, and transcend the self-other binaries. A biased uncritical rationality which focusses on identifying the flaws and errors of the Other can blind us to our own faults. The building block of this mindset is an appreciation and acknowledgment of our human limitations, our fallibility and our susceptibility to errors, even in the loftiest ideas that one may hold. Drawing on ideas from philosophy of science, political history and social and political theories, this chapter argues for a more open, more humble narrative in which agencies of individual human beings and communities are taken seriously in order to nurture criticality and reach a more peaceful world.
