ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the experiences of five transgender athletes namely: Alex, Sam, Blake, Casey and Dylan from various regions of the US, with data collected via interviews conducted in May, 2016. All participants are Female-to-Male (FtM) transgender athletes and the interviews are focused on their experiences with sport from childhood, through their transition, and into their current day-to-day lives. The chapter aims to learn about their everyday experiences and to showcase the voices of competitive athletes who are not celebrities or in the media spotlight. The teammates, coaches and opponents discussed for this research have all demonstrated high levels of inclusivity toward transgender athletes. In January 2016, the International Olympic Committee created new guidelines that opened the door for more transgender athletes to compete internationally. As the world attempts to accommodate and understand transgender athletes in sport, it remains vital to understand the perspectives of these athletes and their everyday experiences as human beings.
