ABSTRACT
Sophie Cook made history by becoming the first transgender person to work in the English Premier League, following her transition in the summer of 2015. This chapter suggests attitudinal improvement toward the transgender community in football, their presence remains somewhat invisible – especially in the otherwise diverse world of the English Premier League. It outlines how contemporary football culture in the UK has become increasingly accepting of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) involvement in the game. The chapter reviews the current literature focusing on football and sexual minorities. It focuses on the growing levels of acceptance, inclusivity and support of LGB athletes in football. The chapter explains the current literature focusing on the experiences of transgender individuals in football, and sport more broadly. It also focuses on the existing literature relating to transgender involvement in sport. The chapter summarizes how extensive contemporary research highlights that football is more acceptant of sexual minorities than ever before.
