ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the participation of transgender people in sports. It is particularly important for school sports to be open to transgender students. School sport programmes are integral parts of the high school and college experience, particularly in the United States. Core values of equal opportunity and inclusion demand that educational leaders adopt thoughtful and effective policies that enable all students to participate fully in school athletic programmes. The chapter concerns about creating an 'unfair competitive advantage' on sex-separated teams is the primary reason administrators provide when they resist policies ensuring equal participation of transgender student athletes. All stakeholders in high school and collegiate athletics will benefit from adopting fair and inclusive policies that enable transgender student athletes to participate on school sports teams. The policies are recommended for competitive athletic participation on teams and in organized extramural competition, comprised of leagues with state and national championships, among high school and collegiate schools.
