ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the few surveys exploring the relationship between sport and physical exercise (SPE) among trans people find numerous barriers, and an alarming number of situations of harassment and violence. It describes the participation of Spanish trans persons in SPE and relates participation with self-defined gender and type of SPE practiced by trans persons in Spain. The chapter examines data from the quantitative phase related to SPE practice after gender disclosure, that is, the moment in which trans persons made public and started to live according their gender identity. It also presents a preliminary description of the results obtained using frequencies and percentages of SPE participation as a whole and by self-defined gender. Self-defined gender identities also influence the type of activities chosen by trans persons. However, whenever trans persons get involved in more regulated forms of SPE, a gender pattern characterized by 'trans men' (TM) predominance emerges.
