ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of contemporary findings associated with well-being in a range of sport and physical activity domains. The chapter is organized in two sections, the first of which focuses on the value of engagement in physical activity for a range of physical and mental health and well-being–related outcomes. Here we also consider relatively new topics, including green and blue exercise and parasocial relationships. The second section addresses ideas about well-being and performance relationships, with particular reference to competitive achievement domains in sport. We review how the role of well-being in sport performance is evolving in the light of contemporary evidence from positive psychology (PP) and sport and exercise psychology (SEP), and we touch on a number of emerging research foci such as athlete well-being, coach well-being and emotional contagion.
