ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects on the challenges which arise from researching the far right, racism and populism. The first section analyses the current media landscape which has become an unavoidable part of research on such a political, polemical and timely topic. To illustrate some of the many potential traps within the field, the chapter then explores four interlinked areas which are essential to consider before undertaking reflective and critical research on the far right. As way of concluding, the chapter ask a series of questions, informed by the authors’ own experience and critique, for researchers to reflect on. The intention behind this chapter is not to undertake an exhaustive study of the problems identified or negate different approaches, but think through and critically reflect on the politics of engaging with and analysing the far right in research, the media and general public discourse.
