ABSTRACT

The health benefits of regular physical activity (PA) are well known and recognized. The school setting is an essential arena for impacting the development of a physically active lifestyle, especially among the least active and unfit children, because all children can be reached at school regardless of their earlier experiences with, motivation and attitude toward, PA. Educational activities are guided by the national core curricula, qualification requirements and objectives laid down in legislation. The number of lessons provided in Finnish schools is 19-30 per week, depending on the grade and number of optional subjects taken. Danish schools' quality assurance comprises different tools. The Finnish Schools on the Move (FSM) programme began in 2010. The programme coordinates actions aiming to establish a physically active culture in all Finnish comprehensive schools. Denmark implemented a comprehensive school reform programme in 2014, including, among other things, PA requirements of approximately 45 minutes per day during the school day.
