ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relationship between taste and national identity nostalgia, focusing on immigrants from Macedonia living in Vienna, Austria. Focusing on Macedonians who came to Austria before the disintegration of Yugoslavia (before 1991) and those who emigrated subsequently (as immigrants coming from the Republic of Macedonia), the chapter maps the correlation between “Yugo-nostalgia” and longed-for flavours of industrial products available in state supermarkets in Macedonia (as part of Yugoslavia) during the period 1970s–1980s. Two products in particular – Gazoza and Stobi Flips– stood out as the most craved, establishing a clear link between their affective and symbolic (taste) appeal and wider issues of displacement.
