ABSTRACT

This chapter shows the initiation of political squatting in Greece and its primary concentration in the urban context, and expresses arguments about the alliance between state tolerance, real estate strategies and fascist activity in the Athenian centre. In 2012, the Greek right-wing government announced its attack against the political squats. The European squatting movement, as it is known today, has existed since the beginning of the 20th century. According to Pruijt's categorization of urban squatting, Greek case refers to the categories of 'Squatting as an alternative housing strategy' and 'Political squatting'. In most of the cases, the anarchist and anti-authoritarian movement supports the squats that are active in the political and social life of the cities through anti-systemic actions. Indeed, the Greek squatting movement, even though is not homogeneous, has as its main aim the cultural and political expression and as its secondary the housing issues.
