ABSTRACT

In media discourse, gendered stories are prominent, and would thus possibly also be present in the research participants' storytelling. The media coverage of the issue subscribes to gendered stereotypes, claiming that women lead third-sector organizations because 'women want to work with people', women appreciate the opportunity to 'make a difference' and 'combine passion and work', or the story goes that non-profits provide more family-friendly work environments, implying that motherhood guides women's career choices. The third sector represents a rich site for studying the articulations of alternative cultural logics in the context of professional organizations. This chapter explores such articulations and in particular discusses possible opposition and resistance to a neoliberal ethos in organizations. The discussion draws on critical feminist perspectives, which are particularly relevant because the competing organizational logics at play in the third sector are heavily entangled with gender patterns and gendered interpretations.
