ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a selection of future scenarios devised by intellectuals and researchers and discusses the elitist and authoritarian tendencies and the opportunities for political agency contained within them. The return of authoritarian tendencies in discussions about the society of tomorrow has only been subject to minimal discussion in either the academic arena or the public domain. Their view is that analyses of the organizational and political potential for human agency that are presented in visions of the future are not afforded enough attention in organizational studies. In addition to concrete and technological challenges for a 'greener society', they believe that critical analyses of the underlying ideologies of these future scenarios are essential. The chapter addresses this challenge by examining three visions of the future. The social actions represent performative knowledge and ideology productions with a potential impact upon public discourse, for research and for future policies.
