ABSTRACT
The term parallel text refers to versions of a text in two or more languages, presented together. Since their first appearance in electronic form in the late 1980s, parallel texts have found various uses for translation and translators, most notably for bilingual concordances, as translation memories and as learning data for machine translation. These applications have changed the way many professional translators work, sometimes in radical ways. In this chapter, we review these applications in detail, and discuss how parallel texts are collected, structured, aligned and managed.
