ABSTRACT

This chapter presents that the human geography's turn to the sea with a particular focus on critical geographies and the concepts of placefulness and mobilities and discusses the way forward in terms of ontology and analytical framework. The two most prominent geographers of the 21st century who have largely contributed to the debate on maritime geographies are Philip Steinberg and Kimberley Peters. They have been at the forefront of the current academic debates in geography on the specificities, nature and dynamics of the maritime space, and have clearly pushed for a disciplinary turn towards the oceans. Steinberg is right to highlight the influence of post-modern capitalism in explaining the territorialisation of the seas. Ocean governance and maritime security are concerned with the management and control of human activities at sea as well as of the movements associated with human activities, which constitutes a response to the challenge of maritime mobilities.
