ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the role of port workers as simultaneously representative of maritime and other transport interests, as well as being members of local communities and polities, has positioned them as central intermediaries in the port greening process. It explores the role of port workers in shaping maritime cargo flows in relation to port greening initiatives. The chapter looks at the role dockworkers play in terminal development and operations through the lens of greening practices on the docks. It focuses on the social implications which come into play, rather than examining environmental concerns of the port, such as emissions, sediment disruption or habitat destruction. The chapter investigates the construction of local spatialities, jurisdictions and exclusions in the intimate connections between dockworker and city. It argues that maritime mobilities need to pay more attention to the collective actions labour.
