ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns the issue of the complexity of our society and of our economic system and especially the fact that such complexity, if the system grows, will also grow. An important aspect to be taken into account is that the system under analysis is assumed to be growing, because this is the feature that, according to classical economy and political refrains, must be insured and kept for the health of our societies. Even though, listening to non-technical speeches and reading newspapers, we could sometime be led to think that the term growth simply is some synonym of welfare, happy life and similar concepts, it must be stressed that the economic growth in our present world always has a material basis. In an economic system, the network is destined to produce an ever growing wealth which is made of things and services evaluated by their price.
