ABSTRACT

One of the most obvious intersections of music and technology is the recording process. As an entryway into the intersection of jazz and technology, this chapter discusses the history of recording technology, the roles of artists, producers, engineers, and record labels in the recording process, and the dissemination of music via various media types for sales and promotion. The question of how these various issues affect the content of the music, how musicians approach the creative process, and the ways artists are finding to support themselves and their work are also investigated here. In addition, standard tropes regarding the jazz aesthetic are challenged as the literature regarding the recording process in jazz is examined.
