ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses the relationship between jazz and Brazilian popular music observed through a sociological view. It will be demonstrated how jazz had a place, even before the beginning of Bossa Nova, in a comprehensive debate about the development of a political and cultural project for Brazil. Simultaneously, an understanding will be attempted as to how this debate in the field of popular music is also related to the development of a record music industry and of a symbolic goods market in Brazil.
